Schüco: German manufacturer of aluminum systems

There are manufacturers against whom all others are measured. Schüco is one of them. The German company from Bielefeld has held the position of technological benchmark for the industry for more than seventy years: when the conversation turns to what premium aluminum windows, doors, or facades should be, it is, one way or another, a discussion about the standards set by Schüco.

Over this time, the company has grown from a six-person workshop into a corporation with a turnover of €2.05 billion in 2024, a presence in 80 countries, and a partner network of 40,000 enterprises. Its product portfolio covers windows, doors, sliding systems, facades, winter gardens, and integrated solar energy — which in itself is a rarity: most profile manufacturers do not venture into adjacent engineering niches.

Company History

Schüco was founded on January 1, 1951, in the small town of Porta Westfalica in eastern Westphalia. The founder hired six people, and together they made virtually everything that could be made from aluminum: display cases, canopies, hinged doors. The founder’s motto — «I want to, and I will» — reflected the character of the enterprise: a small workshop with engineering ambitions.

In 1954, the company moved to Bielefeld, where it remains to this day. By that time, aluminum was rapidly entering construction practice in postwar West Germany, and Schüco found itself in the right place at the right time: the development of aluminum profile systems became its primary focus. Between 1955 and 1963, one after another, sales offices opened in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Hamburg, and the first licensing agreements allowed expansion into European markets.

A pivotal moment in the company’s history came in 1963: Schüco became part of the large German metallurgical holding Otto Fuchs KG. It was then that the current name appeared — an abbreviation of Schürmann & Co. This step opened access to production resources that a small independent enterprise could never have assembled on its own. In 1964, subsidiaries were opened in France, the Netherlands, and Denmark, and a division for aluminum facades for the furniture industry was launched.

With access to the metallurgical holding’s resources, Schüco actively expanded its product portfolio over the next decade. In 1970–1971, the company released windows, doors, and facades made of aluminum in the modern sense — with thermal breaks and large-format sliding systems with thermal insulation. It was then that the principle was established, which the company has been developing to this day: the building envelope as a unified engineering system, rather than a collection of separate products.

In 1990, the construction boom in Eastern Europe following German reunification brought the company a turnover that exceeded one billion Deutsche Marks for the first time. In the late 1990s, Schüco entered the solar energy market — one of the first among window and facade system manufacturers. Today, the company employs more than 6,850 people, and Schüco systems are installed on thousands of projects worldwide — from private residences to airports and stadiums.

Manufacturing: Where the Advantage Lies

Membership in a metallurgical holding fundamentally defines Schüco’s production model. Behind the company stands a full-fledged metallurgical industrial base with decades of experience working with aluminum alloys — something that cannot be built in five or even ten years.

Design and research are conducted in the company’s own R&D center in Bielefeld. This means that new systems are developed not in cooperation with external engineering offices but internally: the engineers who conceive the profile are in the same organization as the technologists who will produce it. In practice, this shortens the time from concept to series production and reduces the risk of discrepancies between calculated and actual performance characteristics.

The products bear the «Made in Germany» marking — not as a marketing slogan but as a technical fact: key components are manufactured at the holding’s German facilities.

Of particular note is the Cradle to Cradle environmental certification — an international standard that assesses the entire product life cycle: from production to disposal. Obtaining it is more challenging than standard ISO certifications: it verifies recyclability, the toxicity of components, the use of renewable energy, and social responsibility. For the aluminum industry, this is still a rarity.

Beyond the systems themselves, Schüco provides partners with production software for calculation and fabrication — the technological chain does not end with the delivery of the profile.

Market Position

Schüco is one of the benchmarks that define what «German quality» means in aluminum systems. This is not a modest claim: the company has spent seven decades shaping technical standards that subsequent tiers of manufacturers then replicate, and it collaborates with 30,000 architectural firms worldwide — a figure that alone speaks to the brand’s level of involvement in the design process.

At the same time, Schüco does not work directly with end customers but through a network of 10,000 processing partners: window manufacturers, facade companies, and installers. This is a fundamental business model: Schüco supplies the system, knowledge, and tools, while the partner takes responsibility for fabrication and installation on the specific project. The advantage of this approach is scale of reach. The downside is that the quality of the finished product depends on the competence of the specific partner, not just on the system itself.

The cost of structures using Schüco systems is naturally higher than that of manufacturers in the Eastern European price segment. But in the category of projects where an architect or developer chooses Schüco, price is rarely the deciding factor: they choose reputation, the depth of the product line, technical support, and confidence in long-term supply stability.

Window Systems

Schüco’s window lineup is built around the AWS (Aluminium Window System) family with installation depths ranging from 55 to 120 mm. Within each series, there are several thermal performance modifications: standard (HI), enhanced (SI), and maximum (SI+). This gives the architect the ability to select the required level of energy efficiency without changing the base system.

AWS 70.HI and AWS 75 — workhorse series

AWS 70.HI with a 70 mm depth is the workhorse of the lineup. Uf ranges from 1.3 to 1.7 W/(m²·K) depending on the modification — this is the level of good PVC systems, but in aluminum. A wide selection of opening types: casement, tilt, balcony doors, and top-hung.

AWS 75 with a 75 mm depth is a broader series with a rich assortment of profiles. The AWS 75 BS.SI+ version features a concealed sash: from the outside, the window appears as a monolithic glazed surface without a visible frame, while still functioning as an opening unit. Uf in the SI version starts from 0.9 W/(m²·K). It is compatible with ADS door systems — windows and doors can be designed in a unified architectural logic.

AWS 90.SI+ — the Passive House certified flagship

This is the system Schüco is betting on most heavily in the energy-efficient construction segment. Installation depth is 90 mm. Thermal transmittance Uf = 0.71 W/(m²·K) — one of the best figures among aluminum window systems. The system is certified by the Passive House Institute: compliance with the passive house standard is verified by an independent organization.

A notable structural feature: multi-chamber thermal breaks with foam inserts. A standard polyamide thermal break is a single bridge between the exterior and interior profiles. Here, there are several of them, and each is additionally filled with foam material — this breaks the path of thermal conductivity in multiple places rather than just one. The result: Uf of 0.71 with a visible mullion width of just 99 mm — a combination that was considered impossible in aluminum just a few years ago.

Burglar resistance up to RC3. Integration with smart home systems via concealed AvanTec SimplySmart hardware: open-position sensors, automatic locking when leaving, and smartphone control.

AWS 112 IC and LivIng — when a slim profile matters most

AWS 112 IC (Insulation Cover) is a system with no peer in terms of the ratio of mullion width to thermal performance. Visible width of 120 mm at Uf = 0.8 W/(m²·K) and Uw = 0.75 W/(m²·K) with a double-pane IGU — this is passive house level with a very slim profile. This is achieved through an insulated cover cap that conceals the fastening zone without creating thermal bridges. Burglar resistance up to RC3. Coating can be applied to finished profiles, expanding finishing options.

LivIng is a hybrid system with aluminum reinforcement inside a PVC profile. Depth of 82 mm, passive house level. The untreated aluminum surface inside the profile reflects thermal radiation, improving thermal insulation without steel reinforcement. «Made in Germany» marking. Three levels of perimeter sealing, effective protection against wind and moisture throughout the service life.

AWS 120 CC.SI — integrated solar shading within the profile

This system is for projects with high demands for both thermal insulation and solar shading. The IGU and blinds are combined into a single unit: the blinds are housed between two glass panes inside the profile. When the blinds are raised, only a minimal portion of the main profile is visible from the outside. When lowered, there are no side blocks that would reveal external louvers. The solution eliminates the need to install a separate solar shading system on the exterior of the building.

Thus, the AWS lineup covers the entire range — from standard residential applications to passive houses and projects with integrated solar shading, while maintaining a common system logic across all levels.

Sliding Systems

ASS 70.HI — the core lift-and-slide system

ASS (Aluminium Sliding System) 70.HI is the most widely used sliding system in the lineup. Installation depth is 70 mm. Uw < 1.3 W/(m²·K) depending on the configuration. Sash weight up to 300 kg, up to 400 kg in special configurations. Maximum sash area up to 9 m².

Frame configurations: single, double, or triple tracks. Three tracks allow the infill to slide in three directions — the entire opening becomes open from wall to wall. Water tightness up to 1050 Pa — sufficient for most climate zones. Burglar resistance up to RC2.

Optional component e-slide: a fully concealed electric drive integrated into the profile. It is not visible from the outside — the sash moves as if by itself. SmartStop stops movement when encountering an obstruction, SmartClose gently closes and locks the door from any position.

ASS 77 PD — panoramic design with a plastic profile

ASS 77 PD (Panorama Design) is a system with a fundamentally different approach to thermal insulation: the frame profiles are made not of aluminum but of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (pultrusion). Fiberglass conducts heat several times less effectively than aluminum, allowing Uw = 0.84 W/(m²·K) — passive house level — to be achieved without multiple thermal breaks. The plastic is coated with any color finish, and visually the system is indistinguishable from aluminum.

Accepts IGUs up to 60 mm thick. The frame is installed flush with the floor. Three tracks. Built-in sensors at the top for passage zone control and finger pinch protection.

The ASS 77 PD.SI version with super thermal insulation and ASS 77 PD.HI with enhanced thermal insulation cover different climate zones and requirements.

Schüco Seamless — facade and sliding door as one system

This is not a separate product but a combination of two systems: the FWS 35 PD facade system and the ASS 77 PD sliding system within a unified architectural concept. The mullion width at the connection point is 37 mm. Profiles recess into the floor or wall. The 90 mm high frame integrates into the building envelope from the side and bottom, even with limited installation height. The result is a virtually seamless connection between the curtain wall and the sliding door in one continuous glass plane.

Folding Systems and Non-Thermal Systems

ASS 80 FD.HI — a folding accordion door with enhanced thermal insulation. A wide selection of configurations, quiet operation.

ASS 50.NI — a sliding and lift-and-slide system without thermal insulation. A flat threshold, with the ability to integrate tilt-and-turn mechanisms into the moving sashes. For verandas, unheated spaces, and summer zones.

Schüco’s sliding solutions cover the entire range of applications — from simple terrace doors to panoramic facades with passive house certification, and integrated automation turns any of these systems into a full-fledged smart home component.

Facade Systems

FW 50+ and FWS 50 — the best-selling facade system in Europe

 

FW 50+ is a mullion-transom facade system that can justifiably be called an industry standard: according to the company, it is one of the best-selling facade systems in Europe. Behind this is not marketing but practice: the system is compatible with all of Schüco’s window (AWS), sliding (ASS), and door (ADS) systems, accepts IGUs up to 64 mm, withstands burglar resistance up to RC3, and allows communication cables to be routed directly through the mullion cavities.

Lineup variants: FW 50+.HI — enhanced thermal insulation, FW 50+.SI — super thermal insulation with Uf of 0.7 W/(m²·K), passive house level. FW 60+ — same but with a visible width of 60 mm. FW 50+ CV — ribbon glazing of entire spans and floors. FW 50+ S — steel frame instead of aluminum, for exceptionally large spans and foyers.

FW 50+ SG and FW 60+ SG — structural glazing

 

The structural glazing version: from the outside, no profiles are visible at all — only a glass surface with thin silicone joints. Profiles remain only on the interior side. A cross-shaped reinforced support allows work with IGUs weighing up to 650 kg — this parameter determines its application on large commercial projects with non-standard formats.

FWS 35 PD — the slimmest facade profile

Visible mullion width — 35 mm. For a mullion-transom system, this is a record low. Used where the architect wants maximum transparency from the facade. Available in HI and SI versions. This is the system that is part of the Schüco Seamless combination.

USC 65 and UCC 65 SG — unitized facades

For high-rise buildings where on-site assembly is impractical, Schüco offers a unitized facade: panels are fully manufactured at the factory and installed on the project as finished elements. USC 65 is the basic unitized system, UCC 65 SG is the structural glazing version, with no visible profiles from the outside.

FW 50+ AOT and AOT/AOS — stick-on systems for timber and steel

For the renovation of historic buildings with timber or steel load-bearing structures — stick-on aluminum systems that are fastened over the existing frame. AOT is for timber structures, AOS is for steel. They allow the facade of a historic building to be updated with modern aluminum profiles without demolishing the load-bearing structure.

Additional Products

Solar energy. Schüco is one of the few profile system manufacturers with its own BIPV product line. ProSol TF+ are solar modules integrated into the company’s facade and roofing systems. This is not separate brackets with panels mounted on top of the facade, but a structural solution where the facade panel and the solar module are one element.

Automatic doors. ASS automatic is a fully integrated automatic sliding door system with drive, controls, and sensors as a single product, not a collection of components from different suppliers.

Winter gardens and terrace roofs. The PRC 50 system is a modular construction for single-pitch, hip, and dual-pitch roofs. Standard Schüco window and sliding systems can be integrated into it, creating a fully functional heated winter garden with uniform profiles around the entire perimeter.

Digital solutions. Schüco provides partners with software for calculation, configuration, and fabrication, as well as service tools for managing a project from sketch to installation. This is part of the business model: Schüco is embedded in the partner’s workflow, not just delivering profiles.

Sustainability

Schüco’s environmental strategy has long extended beyond the energy efficiency of individual window systems. The company views the building as part of a circular economy: materials must retain value even after the end of a building’s service life. This is why many systems are designed for full disassembly, reuse, and recycling with minimal loss of metal quality.

Dozens of Schüco systems have received Cradle to Cradle certification at Silver and Bronze levels — including AWS windows, FWS facades, ADS doors, and solar shading systems. The certification assesses not only recyclability but also the safety of material composition, the share of renewable energy in production, responsible water use, and social accountability. All certified systems are supplied without additional markup and help accumulate points for LEED and DGNB building certifications.

OneLab Testing Laboratories

Before being brought to market, new Schüco systems undergo testing in the company’s own international network of OneLab laboratories. Here, virtually everything related to the building envelope is verified: air and water permeability, wind load resistance, hardware durability, acoustics, thermal insulation, burglar resistance, and compliance with international building codes.

The laboratories have their own accreditation and accept not only serial products but also custom structural solutions for specific projects. This is important for complex projects: the architect or facade engineer can verify, before construction begins, how a non-standard design will perform under real operating conditions.

What to Consider When Choosing

Schüco is a strong choice when technical depth of the product line and confidence that the system being installed today will continue to be supported for another twenty years are what matter most. It is not the most budget-friendly option — but in the category of projects where Schüco is chosen, budget is rarely the primary concern.
